It is a huge part of our tradition to share this stunning corner of the Rockies we call home with people while riding a good horse. However, the natural beauty and remoteness of the area lends itself to a variety of outdoor experiences that are sure to provide you with a camera full of memories and a soul full of peace.

When you are not riding, the Elkhorn is a wonderful place for quiet walks or hiking. Many choose to take a map and enjoy the trails that are close to the ranch, venture up the road to Yellowstone Park (just a mile and a half from our gate), or walk along the Gallatin River. Guided hikes can be scheduled some afternoons - plan to bring your camera and your flower
book!
Fishing is a popular option. Located in the midst of some
of the world's finest blue ribbon streams, you can choose the Gallatin which runs along the ranch boundary, the nearby Yellowstone or Madison Rivers, or any number of creeks, including those in our corner of Yellowstone National Park. Fishing and trail riding can be combined by riding to fishing destinations within Yellowstone. We can also put you in touch with a local guide who can show you some of the secrets of fishing our high mountain streams or float fishing.
Whitewater rafting is available at Big Sky, just a few
minutes down the road. Many choose this adventure
Wednesday afternoon after the breakfast ride. At Big
Sky you can also rent a bike, take the tram to the top
of Lone Peak, hike in new country or explore the many
shops and galleries.
Yellowstone Park is just minutes away. Arrangements are easily made for a car, complete with picnic and travel tips, into Yellowstone Park, or Grand Teton Park farther south. Frequently visitors will fly into either Salt Lake City, Utah or Jackson Hole, Wyoming a few days before coming to the ranch. This gives them the opportunity to explore some of the area before settling at the Elkhorn.
A peaceful afternoon on your porch reading while the kids are off riding is perhaps one of the most cherished alternatives!
Many evenings include ranch activities. These are family events and include cookouts, bonfires and the Saturday night square dance.
